On His Last Trip to the Vet, This Cat Wouldn't Let Go of His Owners' Hands

Stories of the powerful bonds between pets and their owners get us every time—there's the dog who refused to leave his autistic owner's bedside, and the cat who protected his pregnant owner's belly. The latest tale to go viral is no exception—and it's making animals lovers everywhere well up with tears.

Reddit user abernha3 recently posted an image of his cat, Andrew, sitting next to him during a car ride. In the photo, the cat appears to be holding both of his owners' hands. While the gesture alone is heartwarming, the owner revealed that they were on their way to put Andrew to sleep. "He held our hands on his last trip to the vet. Little Andrew has been much stronger than his mom and I," wrote the Reddit user.

Thanks all. Little Andrew was my junior. He was 15 and a half and loved everyone, but just got old and sick over the last year. He purred everyday of his life and when he lost that, I knew it was time. Always sad to lose a friend. Sorry for everybody else's losses as well.
Andrew may or may not have known he was about to be put to sleep, but he definitely was picking up on his owners' emotions. Barbara J. King, a professor of anthropology at the College of William and Mary, explained to TODAY that cats can be very attuned to the feelings of humans. "I don't think we have the scientific evidence to say that animals can anticipate their own death, but they are probably very aware that they feel bad," she said. "They also know something is wrong, and can pick up on our worries when they reach out for love and comfort."

Rest in peace, sweet Andrew.
